RYA
TRAINING 2010
WELCOME
Isle of Skye Yachts are delighted to be able to
offer you an opportunity to attend one of their
RYA Practical Courses. The 5 day courses with
an RYA qualified Yachtmaster Instructor usually
take place aboard the Bavaria 32 “Sleat
Princess” or, for larger groups on the Beneteau
Oceanis 393 “Sleat Lady”. During
the winter we have Theory courses for those wanting
to take the first tentative (warm & dry!)
steps to RYA qualifications and NEW
we will shortly be offering the SRC Radio
Licence Course. Isle of Skye Yachts also offer
Powerboat training on our new 4.8m RIB "Amber"
with a 60HP 4 Stroke Outboard.

RYA
COURSES AVAILABLE
COMPETENT
CREW
This course is for beginners wishing to build
up their sailing skills. It is aimed at people
who would like to become active crew rather than
just passengers. The Instructor will give a full
safety briefing before the first passage, but
virtually all the course is hands on. One of the
pleasures of this course is that total strangers
start working together as a team to make their
yacht sail efficiently and look smart. By the
end of the course should be able to steer, handle
sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist
in the daily routines on board.
No
experience is required prior to this course but
you might find it useful to have sailed in a dinghy
or on a yacht previously.

DAY
SKIPPER
This course is for aspiring Skippers who have
some yachting experience and basic navigation
and sailing ability. Each trainee will be asked
to Skipper the yacht on a short passage. The instructor
will be on hand to give advice and encouragement,
and, to ensure that your destination is reached
safely. The essential element is that you experience
being in charge, taking the credit when all goes
well and also being responsible when it doesn’t.
The end of each day will usually be spent around
the chart table discussing the passages and gaining
from each others experiences.
Experience
prior to the course should include; Day Skipper
Shorebased course and some practical sailing experience
including ability to sail a triangular course.
COASTAL
SKIPPER PRACTICAL and YACHTMASTER COASTAL/OFFSHORE
PREP.
This is an advanced Skippering Course for yachtsmen
and women who have considerable knowledge of sailing
and navigation and are usually aspiring towards
a Certificate of Competence. (CoC) Aspiring Coastal
Skippers should be able to undertake more difficult
passages by day and night and handle the yacht
in more demanding conditions. By the end of the
week you should have the knowledge, if not the
experience, to become a Yachtmaster.
Pre-course
experience; Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore
Shorebased course, 15 days sailing experience
(2 as Skipper), 300 miles including 8 night hours.
If
you would like to book an external Examiner for
either of these CoC's you can arrange this through
the RYA website www.rya.org.uk/coursestraining/exams/Pages/bookyourexam.aspx
to follow on directly after the course finishes.
Please give both RYA and Isle of Skye Yachts as
much notice as possible if you would like to do
this (minimum 3 weeks).

Sleat
Princess navigating round the ferry
Sailing
area
The courses will start in late afternoon with
a briefing and an opportunity to find their way
around the yacht, and, depending on the weather
a short “shake down” cruise to Loch
Nevis, Isle Ornsay or Doune. Depending on the
weather, in five days the Instructor may take
you North up the Inner Sound to Plockton, Rona
and Portree or head south to the Small Isles and
Tobermory. At the end of the five days in this
wonderful cruising area, as well as learning from
the course you will have visited a selection of
interesting places and have had an enjoyable holiday.
For
2010 most of the courses will be limited to a
maximum of 4 persons. We aim to have a mix of
people studying for different certificates on
each course so if you are an aspiring Coastal
Skipper you should have one or two genuine Competent
Crew to lead and inspire!
Meals
Food is provided on a Full Board basis with a
cooked or continental breakfast, light lunch and
two course dinner. There is also a generous selection
of snacks available to help yourself to at any
time of the day or night but you might like to
bring along a few “treats” to add
to your enjoyment!
If you are vegetarian or have any other dietary
requirements we will do our best to accommodate
them provided you enter details on your booking
form, however, there are limitations on special
provisions which can be obtained locally.
Alcoholic drinks are not provided – you
are welcome to bring along a small selection of
your own to share with the rest of the crew, however,
as it is a course, only drinking in moderation
will be tolerated.
COST
£420 per course for April and September
and £450 for all other dates. This includes;
full board on the yacht, diesel, gas and the services
of your instructor. There will perhaps be one
or two evening meals eaten ashore which would
be at your own expense.
There is no security deposit for courses, however,
if you should happen to give a winch handle or
boat hook swimming lessons reimbursement for the
item would be requested! Log book(s) for your
course should be purchased from us or directly
from the RYA and cost £4.85 plus postage
and packing. Certificates will be issued at the
end of the course if the required standard is
attained.
If you wish to reserve the yacht for an extra
day to do the Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster CoC
examination there will be an additional charge
for this.
BOOKING
If you would like to make a reservation for one
the courses please contact us by phone or email
to check availability and then complete the enclosed
booking form and return it with a deposit of £100.
You will be invoiced for the balance of the course
costs 6 weeks before it commences and this will
be due for payment 4 weeks before the start date.
